The Bible presents great themes that are universally relevant for the faith formation of all human beings in all times and places. Great themes such as call, creation, covenant, Christ, commitment, and community provide points of encounter between contemporary life and the times, places, and people in the Bible. As we reflect upon faith issues in our daily lives, we can engage biblical themes in order to learn more about God and to interpret what it means to live with faith in God. The great themes of the Bible are the great themes of life.

Community: Our Community Now and in God’s Future interprets the meaning of God’s love for today, using 1 John for insight. It draws on passages from Revelation to explore the new community in Christ and how that community will live in God’s new world. The book offers the following sessions:

Session 1, “KNOWN BY OUR LOVE,” explores the inseparability of love of God and love of neighbor. (1 John 2:7-17; 3)

Session 2, “THE SOURCE OF LIFE AND LOVE,” asserts that our love for one another comes from God who first love us and who abides with us. (1 John 4:7-21; 5:1-12)

Session 3, “CHRIST IS OUR KING,” affirms Jesus Christ as our ultimate leader as it explores the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the resurrection, and the ongoing presence of the resurrected Lord in our lives. (Revelation 1:1-20; Luke 19:28-40; John 20:1-18, 30-31)

Session 4, “WE WORSHIP GOD,” describes how God is worthy of worship from all beings in heaven and on earth and acknowledges the church as the holy community in which we can find ultimate meaning in our lives. (Revelation 4; Revelation 19)

Session 5, “REDEEMED AND PROTECTED BY CHRIST,” reassures us that the Lamb has redeemed us and protects us. (Revelation 5; Revelation 7)

Session 6, “FROM TEMPORARY TO PERMANENT HOUSING,” promises God’s peace, wholeness, and safety and God’s abiding presence in a new heaven and a new earth. (Revelation 21-22:5)

Session 7, “HAPPILY EVER AFTER,” tells us to trust that Jesus Christ will come again and that his coming will transform everything into the ultimate happy ending for us. (Revelation 22:6-21)

You will have many opportunities to encounter and experience the life-transforming love of God as you participate in a Great Themes of the Bible group. We pray that your experience in the group will lead you to see yourself as a beloved human being created in the image of God and to grow in your love of God, self, and neighbor.
