Mine eyes didst see a tiny nail
That peeked beneath the manger rail,
Me thinkst the builder of the bed---
Didst know a king would lay his head,
In what was just a common thing---
He placed a silver nail to bring,
Much more than luck or fortune may---
A sign of what the king would pay,
To give mankind such peace on earth
That only peaceful God could birth,
Through life and death and life once more---
This nail would hold a message for,
All generations yet to be---
Who'd hang a garland round a tree,
And think upon that royal nail
And of the king that did prevail.
