| Islam and War: A Study in Comparative Ethics Author: John Kelsay How does one measure the justice of war? What are the rules? Who has authority to declare war and when? By what criteria do we evaluate modern weapons? This book explores these questions and addresses the lack of comparative perspectives on the ethics of war, particularly with respect to Islam. Kelsay's discussion begins by examining the war in the Persian Gulf and the role of Islamic symbols in the rhetoric of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Kelsay provides an overview of the Islamic tradition in regard to war and peace, and then focuses on the notion of religion as a just cause for war. He explores the important questions of noncombatant immunity and "irregular" wars, and sets all the discussions in his work in the context of classical Islamic thinking and contemporary expressions. Kelsay's aim is to promote deeper understanding of the relationships between ethics, war, and the practice of politics across cultural lines. "John Kelsay does a masterful job of interpreting Islamic tradition on war, relating it to western culture's moral traditions on war, and analyzing its contemporary implications. Approaching his subject from a background in both Christian ethics and previous work on Islamic ethics on war, Kelsay has produced an insightful comparative study with deep historical and thematic roots that focuses with authority and clarity on the problems of armed conflict today."---James Turner Johnson, Professor of Religion and University Director of International Programs, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey "Among the western analyses of Saddam Hussein's call for jihad during the Gulf crisis of 1990-91, Professor John Kelsay's appraisal comes closest to the actual understanding of the Muslim struggle in the context of the western hegemony and the emerging 'New World Order.'"---Abdulaziz Sachedina, Professor of Islamic Studies, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia Date Published: 1/1/93 |
