"Reading the Bible is a complex and difficult undertaking," says author and senior scholar Edward LeRoy Long in the early pages of this thoughtfully written treatment of an important and timely topic. TO LIBERATE AND REDEEM probes how present-day moral decisions can be informed by studying the biblical story of persons and groups who wrestled with similar concerns while standing in faithful responsiveness to God. "The biblical materials," Long writes, "contain many of the same diversities that need to characterize moral reflection as an invitation to be faithful rather than as a demand to be correct."

This unfolding drama is characterized by persons or groups who need liberation because they are trapped in oppressive structures and by those once freed who need to faithfully construct communities of redemption. Long takes account of the full biblical narrative—beginning with the oppression of slavery and the Exodus liberation, in order to look back to the Creation and forward to Christ, Paul, and the early church.

EDWARD LEROY LONG JR. is Pearsall Professor Emeritus of Christian Ethics and Theology of Culture at Drew University. He taught religion at Oberlin College and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and is past president of both the Society of Christian Ethics and the American Theological Society. The author of twelve books, he now lives in Virginia.
