Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born on February 4, 1906 in Breslau, Germany. A Lutheran pastor and theologian, his life was fundamentally changed in 1933 when Adolf Hitler seized power. From then on Bonhoeffer engaged passionately in the church's opposition to Hitler's regime. In 1945 Bonhoeffer was taken to Buchenwald concentration camp and finally to the Flossenburg concentration camp where on April 9, 1945 he was condemned and executed on Hitler's order. His letters, poetry, and writings serve as testimonies to hope and inspiration to millions.
