About the Author
Martin E. Marty is the Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor of the history of modern Christianity at The University of Chicago. He is senior editor of The Christian Century weekly, editor of the fortnightly Context, and co-editor of the quarterly Church History. He has been president of the American Academy of Religion, the American Society of Church History, the American Catholic Historical Association, and the Park Ridge Center for the Study of Health, Faith, and Ethics. He won the National Book Award for Righteous Empire, one of his forty or more books. He has written on Lutheranism for Encyclopedia Britannica. Ordained in 1952, he is an active Lutheran minister and member of Ascension Lutheran Church, Riverside, Illinois.
